Living in a popular neighborhood has its perks. But that popularity can also mean you occasionally find a strange car blocking your driveway, or even parked in your driveway. As a private property owner, you have the right to have that car towed. However, before you call the tow company, look for some information first.

Look for Notes First

It's entirely possible that the car's owner parked there because, say, they were having car trouble and there was nowhere to park on the street, even illegally. See if they left a note with contact information (and definitely contact them). Work with them to get their car out of your driveway; whether you want to let it stay there until the morning is up to you.

Ask Neighbors About It

If it's still during hours when most people are awake, see if your neighbors have any idea whose car it is. Maybe they have a friend visiting, who parked there thinking it would just be for a few minutes, and then they lost track of time. Or, maybe a neighbor saw the car owner park there and walk down to a local club or theater, in which case you know you can go ahead and have the car towed.

Call a Towing Service

Finally, if you can't find the car's owner and your neighbors have no idea where the car is from, go ahead and call a towing company. You've looked for the owner to give them a chance to move the car out of your driveway, but there's only so long you can really wait to have your driveway back. The towing company will likely want proof that you're the property owner; without it, for all they know, you could be a random non-resident having a homeowner's car towed as a prank.

When the towing company removes the car, call your local police or sheriff's department and let them know you had the car towed. Give them the license plate number and the name of the towing company. This is so that, when the owner sees the car is gone and calls the police because they think it was stolen, the police will be able to tell them the car was towed and who they should call to retrieve the car.

Towing can be done 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Towing is not limited to just getting broken-down cars to a mechanic or to removing inappropriately parked cars from commercial lots. You can have a towing service remove strange cars parked in or blocking your driveway.
